LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, Lima will host a student delegation from its sister city in Japan, welcoming a group from Harima-cho later this summer.

The visit marks a continuation of a relationship between the two communities that dates back to 1995. Leaders say the sister city partnership has helped educate residents about cultural differences while also highlighting shared values and experiences.

The delegation is expected to arrive in late July to experience daily life in the United States. As preparations continue, the Lima Sister Cities Association is seeking local families or individuals willing to host visiting students during their stay.

Matthew Neeley, president of the organization, said host families play a key role in providing an authentic experience for the students.

“We are asking you to invite one of these delegates into your home to give them the real American experience. Take them on some errands, take them shopping, ask them what they like, and then like, oh, they like baseball. Find a local baseball game. Take them to a kid's soccer practice. These kids want to experience all the things that you do in your home, in day to day life,” Neeley said.

In addition to host families, the organization is also seeking corporate sponsors to help offset the costs associated with the visit. Those interested in participating or learning more are encouraged to contact the Lima Sister Cities Association.
