LIMA, Ohio (WLIO)– Thursday was Lights On Afterschool Day, a national celebration recognizing programs that keep kids learning after the school day ends.
Mayor Sharetta Smith spent the afternoon visiting local programs that make a difference for the city’s youth. One of her stops included Mentorship Through Music at Sune Records. Their after-school program teaches students the foundations of music production and audio engineering.
“We show them behind the scenes of how to create a song, an album, a video, things of that nature. Most kids want to be Taylor Swift. They want to be Kendrick Lamar. They want to be all these big-time rappers and stars, but they don’t know that there’s a team behind them that makes them that,” said Jason Henderson, owner of Sune Records.
North Middle Schooler Jayden Foster got to show Mayor Smith a beat he made with his classmates.
“We like to rap about our families, what we’re doing, about our lives,” Foster said.
