LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Lima residents spent four weekends sprucing up their neighborhoods as the city's annual Mayor's Spring Clean-Up once again proved to be one of its most successful community engagement initiatives.
Over the course of the four-week event, 834 residents disposed of 737 loads of unwanted items that filled 81 dumpsters throughout the city. Participants also recycled more than 1,300 tires, while city crews collected six tandem truckloads of brush. City officials say the program continues to provide residents with a convenient way to dispose of unwanted materials while helping reduce illegal dumping and encouraging neighborhood pride.
"I think it makes a huge difference. A lot of the community members were pleased. Actually, some of them wanted to have more than just four, but it was a great experience to be able to help the community members get rid of a lot of things that they wanted to get rid of. And also, instead of finding those things in our alleyways and those types of things, they were brought to the cleanup, which was a great thing," said Marcell King, a neighborhood specialist.
The annual clean-up has become one of the city's most effective neighborhood engagement efforts by bringing residents together to improve the appearance of their communities and foster collaboration among neighbors. City administration also thanked the 189 volunteers and numerous dumpster sponsors whose support helped make this year's event a success.
