LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Mercy Health St. Rita’s Medical Center will once again offer an electronic waste recycling opportunity for area residents in recognition of Earth Day.

The collection event will take place Wednesday, April 22, at the medical center’s loading dock area, located along the North Baxter and West High Street corridor near the parking garage. The initiative is part of the hospital’s “Health Beyond Our Walls” program, which aims to extend community impact beyond patient care.

Mercy Health St. Rita’s to host Earth Day e-waste recycling event

Hospital officials say the organization has been recycling electronic waste for years and expanded the effort to include the public. Matt Etzkorn, vice president of mission, highlighted the success of last year’s event.

“Last year was our first year we recycled six tons of cell phones, tablets, laptops, so want to continue that great work and protect our environment and public health.”

Residents are encouraged to bring items such as laptops, cellphones, radios and other small electronics. Vaping devices will also be accepted. However, organizers say certain items will not be collected, including TV screens, light bulbs and appliances containing freon. The e-waste drop-off will be available from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Earth Day.
