Lima Central Catholic students received a difficult but important lesson in responsible driving on Thursday

Personnel from Lima Police, Shawnee Township Fire Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol participated in the demonstration.

The school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) team hosted a mock crash behind the building, where the student body watched first responders simulate the aftermath of a serious accident. Personnel from Lima Police, Shawnee Township Fire Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol participated in the demonstration. The scenario portrayed a drunk student driver involved in a fatal crash that killed two student passengers. The Allen County Coroner’s Office placed deceased dummies in body bags and loaded them into a hearse. Following the crash scene, students gathered in the gym for a mock funeral honoring the two victims — a somber reminder that reckless decisions behind the wheel can have deadly consequences.

“A lot of students don't realize what could happen if you are in an accident in general, and with it being a drunk mistake that a student made, I think that really makes an impact to last on anyone that watches it. And with the mock funeral, the students can really see that someone could die if I do make a wrong decision or destructive decision,” says Teagan Helmig, President of Lima Central Catholic’s SADD Chapter.

With prom scheduled for Friday and graduation approaching, the SADD team hopes the mock crash encourages students to make safe choices on the road.
