LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - A longtime golf association in Lima teaching youth the fundamentals of the game for their summer program.

The Mulligans Golf Association kicked off their summer youth golf program this week as they teach local kids ages 9 through 17 about the basics of golf. Wednesday was an introduction to putting, what many golf enthusiasts and players consider the most important part of the game.

The kids are instructed by members of Mulligans as well as former program student and head instructor, Leiahnni Smith - an LCC graduate and current collegiate golfer.

Golf is a mental game that can teach you a lot of life skills, and for Smith, it's something these kids can pick use to succeed both on the links and in life.

"For me personally, I think that golf really helps with children's problem solving skills as they develop; in golf, you might be behind a tree and you have to figure out you can't move the ball, you have to figure out how to get around it, to get to the hole," said Smith. "If you have an obstacle or a problem that you're trying to get through, you can't just go to town or give up, you have to keep going and you have to wait your turn. I think as they get older and they understand those skills, they will start seeing those changes in themselves, and their parents will be able to see that they have some patience."

The Mulligans Association summer youth program is every Monday and Wednesday from now through July 9th at Tamarac Golf Club and sessions are 10 am to 12:30 pm.
