LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Allen Soil and Water Conservation District is encouraging local gardeners to make environmentally friendly choices through the district’s first Native Plant and Rain Barrel Sale.

The event featured a variety of native and pollinator-friendly plants provided by Native Pathways Nursery of Williamstown, Ohio, including milkweed, indigo species and other plants that support local ecosystems. Representatives from the Johnny Appleseed Park District were also on hand to educate visitors about plants native to the region and the benefits of incorporating them into home landscapes.

While non-native plants can add visual appeal to gardens, organizers say native species provide important environmental advantages because they are naturally adapted to local conditions and support wildlife.

“Native plants are so incredibly important because they are here, they are from here, that means they evolved with our environment, with our soil, with our sun, and with the animals here. So they encourage native animals, they encourage native bugs, they encourage all the pollinators," said Lydia Archambo, stormwater coordinator for the Allen Soil and Water Conservation District.

In addition to promoting native plants, the district highlighted its rain barrel program. The Allen Soil and Water Conservation District sells rain barrels year-round, and some cities and municipalities offer rebates to residents who install them.

Those interested in purchasing a rain barrel or learning more about the program can contact the Allen Soil and Water Conservation District or visit its website for additional information.
