LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Students from the Western Buckeye League put on their thinking caps on Friday for the quiz bowl tournament.
Teams buzzed in, similar to Jeopardy!, to answer questions, and the team with the most correct responses at the end of the round won the match.
Each school's quiz bowl team gathered at Ohio State Lima to put their trivia knowledge to the test during the WBL Quiz Bowl Tournament. Topics ranged from world history and music to science and math.
Teams buzzed in, similar to Jeopardy!, to answer questions, and the team with the most correct responses at the end of the round won the match. Each school competed against the other nine WBL teams, with about 30 questions per round.
For the students, it was a joy to compete against their peers and pool their brainpower with classmates.
Defiance High School won the varsity and the JV tournament with Shawnee finishing runner up in both.
"I just like being right at trivia - there's a certain allure to it," said Evan Conley, a senior at Shawnee High School. "Definitely it's not comparable to other sports, here you're really just using your mind."
"I think it depends on the format; especially in this one, there's a lot of communication between us where if we're not 100% sure, we ask somebody else, and then they might connect it in their head and be like, 'it's actually this' or maybe, 'yeah, you're right'," said George English, a junior at Defiance High School. "I usually tend to do things like geography. Henry, he usually does all the sciences and stuff. We usually kind of share a lot of the history between us. Or then there's Chris, who does like mythology and stuff like that. Jacob does sports with Chris."
Defiance High School won the varsity and the JV tournament with Shawnee finishing runner up in both. The Bulldogs finished a perfect 8-0 on the day and this is the second year in a row that Defiance has won the varsity quiz bowl tournament.
