LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – When lottery jackpots climb into the billions, they often attract players who may have never bought a ticket before — and the latest Powerball drawing is no exception.

The jackpot has surged past $1.4 billion — yes, that’s with a “B” — and continues to grow, enticing both regular players and newcomers hoping for a shot at becoming a billionaire. Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. To win the jackpot, players must match all five white balls plus the Powerball. The odds of doing so are about 1 in 292 million.

Odds slim but hopes high as Powerball prize tops $1.4 billion

Tickets cost $2 per play, with optional add-ons such as Power Play and Double Play increasing the total price.

“Whenever the jackpots are high, generally you get a lot of new customers who normally don’t play,” said Aadhar Nepal, operator of Amazing Clark Station. “They try, everybody tries to test their luck, I would say.”

The next drawing is set for tonight at 10:59 p.m.
