LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Ohio SPCA and Humane Society in Lima is asking the community for help as it works to provide care for hundreds of neglected, injured and abandoned animals.
The shelter is currently seeing an increased number of cruelty cases, as well as neglected and sick animals, putting a strain on its resources.
As a nonprofit agency, the shelter does not receive federal or state funding and relies solely on donations. Officials say continued community support is needed to keep up with the animals' medical needs and daily care.
Tracey Tamayo, a member of the organization's Board of Directors, said community support is also important to maintaining programs that help animals and families.
“We need the community's help more than ever, not only to sustain the shelter, but to be able to reinforce programs like trap neuter release, family assistant programs. We do have some already in the shelter, but to better and to keep the longevity of those programs, we need community support.”
One way residents can support the shelter is by attending its “Paws Under the Stars” event Friday, Aug. 28.
The event will feature a showing of “Homeward Bound” on a big screen at the shelter, beginning at dusk. Guests can begin arriving at 6:30 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. A 50-50 drawing and concessions will also be available, with proceeds supporting the shelter.
Organizers say the event is for people only and ask residents to leave their pets safely at home.
The shelter says donations and community support help provide the medical care, daily necessities and programs needed to give animals a better chance at finding a safe and loving home.
