LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Local high school students got a firsthand look at what it takes to become a social worker and how to earn a degree in the field.

Forty students visited The Ohio State University at Lima for the “Day in the Life of a Social Worker” event, where they met with about 14 area agencies to learn about the different areas of social work and what classes are needed to pursue the profession.

“Social work comes with a lot of stigma on what are social workers and what do we do. And this provides us with a huge opportunity to educate people in the community and students about social work isn't just one thing, it's many things, and there are many different areas you can specialize in with it,” said Elizabeth Osborne, behavioral health specialist at Ohio State Lima.

“Having this opportunity to bring high school students here to continue to share with them information about what the vast field of social work looks like—that there’s this wonderful need in our community, that the jobs are here for them to be able to step into once they complete their bachelor's degree and become licensed social workers—is extremely important, because the need to care in our community, in both Allen, Auglaize, Hardin County and beyond, is very still great,” said Stephanie Price, program coordinator for the Social Work Department at Ohio State Lima.

This marks the third year Ohio State Lima has hosted a social work event for high school students.
