LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - A local church is giving back to the community with a week-long event aimed at helping families and spreading positivity.

Seventh-day Adventist Church kicked off its Summer Blast program on Sunday. The event will provide community members with giveaway opportunities, children’s activities and inspiring messages for all. The giveaways include school supplies, groceries, clothing and more. With more than 900 people already registered, the church is prepared to be a blessing to others.

"What we're trying to do is to help the people to understand that there is somebody in the community who loves and cares for them, and that's this church, right? And so we want to make that very clear to them, that we love them and as best as possible, we're trying to meet their needs spiritually and physically. So we are a church in the community with the community at heart, and we want everyone to know that we are here to support them," said Carl Brooks, pastor with Seventh-day Adventist Church.

"It's been well supported. You know, this is what Jesus did, right? We're modeling Christ. What did he do? He not only met people, people's spiritual needs, but their physical needs, right? And then he bade them follow me, so that's exactly what what we're doing," said Courtney Simons, first elder with Seventh-day Adventist Church.
