ELIDA, Ohio (WLIO) — World Cup excitement continues to grow across the United States as soccer fans gather to support Team USA during the tournament.
The Apex Sports Zone hosted a watch party for Team USA's Round of 16 matchup against Belgium, bringing together local soccer players and fans to cheer on the national team.
The World Cup has reached a fever pitch as international football fans have traveled to the United States, Mexico and Canada to support their countries in the quest for a championship. According to an article published by The Economist, soccer has overtaken baseball as the third most popular sport in the United States, trailing only football and basketball.
Local soccer players said the sport offers more than competition, highlighting the friendships, family connections and enjoyment they have found through the game.
“I think soccer is more than just a sport. I think you build friendships and more of a family with your teammates,” says Colton Rader, Elida Soccer Player.
“Just enjoy a lot of play with all my friends and family. It's really fun just to hang out with family and just enjoy it,” says Jaydyn Garrett, Elida Soccer Player.
“I enjoy running and sometimes I like to take my anger out on the ball and like kick with all force I have,” says Eleanor Higgins, Soccer Player.
“I like running and kicking the ball,” says Abigail Higgins, Soccer Player.
Team USA is looking to win its first Round of 16 match since 2002.
