LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - The Lima affiliate of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice has awarded a college student a scholarship to help continue her education.

Zayria Secession, a psychology major at the University of Toledo, received a $500 scholarship from the nonprofit. The money was raised through the Bonita L. Haynes Golf Scramble. The scholarship honors the legacy of Bonita Haynes, who was tragically killed in 1996 at the Lima Correctional Institution while working as a caseworker. After the scholarship was presented, organizers shared why the award is important and asked Secession what the recognition means to her.

"We want to do this to continue Bonita's legacy and honor her, and we want to make sure that our children have the resources they need if they want to attend college," says Suzette Clemons, Chair, National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice - Lima Affiliate.

"I have a single mom. That is one of the reasons why this scholarship is very so needed. She is sick right now. She is off of work right now, so this being my second year getting this scholarship- this is very much so needed for me, and it helps me continue my studies because I do want to go to graduate school in the future," says Zayria Secession who was awarded the scholarship by NABCJ.

More than $13,000 has been awarded through the scholarship program.
