(CBS) — President Donald Trump said he would pardon baseball great Pete Rose and criticized Major League Baseball for barring the all-time hit leader from the Hall of Fame for gambling.

Rose died last year at 83. He was banned from baseball for life for gambling and admitted in 2004 that he had bet on games, though he maintained he never wagered against his own team.Â
On Truth Social, the president said he will be signing a complete pardon of Rose. Trump did not specify what the pardon would cover, as Rose was not convicted of a crime. Rose, who spent most of his career from 1963 to 1986 with the Cincinnati Reds, won three World Series titles and remains Major League Baseball’s all-time leader in hits, games played, at-bats, singles and outs.
