LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Sexual assault happens more often than many realize, and the University of Northwestern Ohio is taking steps to raise awareness.

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, students and staff created positive impact T-shirts featuring messages of support for survivors and statements opposing sexual violence.

The T-shirts are part of the “Clothesline Project,” a display set up on campus to show the university’s commitment to standing against sexual assault and supporting victims, letting them know they are not alone.

“Events like today, we’ll have people open up as you have conversation, they might feel more free to discuss their experiences and what they have experienced in the past. And it's amazing how many people you find out that sexual assault is really touched, whether personally or through a family member. So, it's a way of healing for everyone and letting them know that they're not alone,” says Danielle McClure, Director of Assessment & Institutional Effectiveness and Student Title IX Coordinator at the University of Northwestern Ohio.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 81% of women and 43% of men nationwide have reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment or assault in their lifetime.
