LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Over the past 20 years, active threat situations have increased nationwide, and security experts say preparation can save lives.

Archery Security Consultants spoke with the West Central Ohio Security Council about the importance of developing active threat response plans to increase employees’ chances of survival. While many businesses have emergency procedures for weather-related events, experts say some lack plans for situations involving a person with a weapon inside their building.

West Central Ohio Security Council learn about preparedness for active threat situations

Archery Security Consultants spoke with the West Central Ohio Security Council about the importance of businesses developing active threat response plans.

Archery Security Consultants stress that mental preparation is just as important as having written policies, even for scenarios employees hope never occur.

“But what it means if you do take the time to just think about, where are the exits when you enter a new facility, how would find my way to safety if I need to, how do I find the safest place, if I'm in a situation, where I need to hide. All those different things or things that you may not want to think about, but it's important to think about. Even if it's just 30 seconds walking into a building, it makes all the difference if you're ever in that situation,” says Jerry Tsai, co-owner of Archery Security Consultants.

Tsai says companies with active threat plans should review them annually to ensure all employees understand how to respond if a situation arises.
