LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The West Ohio Food Bank is a lifeline for hundreds of area seniors, helping ensure they have meals on the table. The organization distributes approximately 1,500 boxes across its 11-county service area.
In Allen County alone, about 600 to 700 seniors receive assistance through the food bank’s Senior Box Program. The program serves individuals 60 years or older who meet 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

Seniors must apply for the program, and if approved, they are given a date and time to pick up their food box.
Tommie Harner, CEO of the West Ohio Food Bank, emphasized the program’s importance. “This is very important. Many of our seniors are living on fixed incomes, so especially with this disruption to SNAP recently, that is really putting a hardship on a lot of our senior clientele. So this box is really a lifesaver for them each month,” Harner said.
