LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Nearly 1,000 people attended the West Ohio Food Bank's annual Resource Fair on Thursday at the Allen County Fairgrounds, making it the organization's largest event of the year.

The event brought together dozens of agencies and organizations to connect residents with services and resources available throughout the community. Representatives from health care providers, health insurance groups, social service agencies, and faith- and family-based organizations were on hand to answer questions and provide information. Many attendees said they appreciated having so many resources available in one location.

“We have some resources already. We're just looking to see if there's anything else that we can reach out for,” said Lima resident Alexandria Rodriguez.

Charles McDaniel Jr. said he enjoyed both the information and activities offered during the event.

“Having fun and got a lot of resources and a lot of free items and they even doing free raffle giveaways for people that might have a chance to win something today,” McDaniel said.

West Ohio Food Bank officials say the fair is designed to help people learn about services that may otherwise go unnoticed.

“A lot of individuals who are out there seeking food assistance don't always have access or know about services that other organizations offer. So, we want to bring all of those organizations into one place where they can go through, they can get information,” said Tommie Harner, CEO of the West Ohio Food Bank.

Following the resource fair, the organization's large-scale food distribution began. Some participants arrived as early as 6 a.m. to secure a place in line for the drive-through distribution. Those receiving assistance were provided with a variety of items, including canned vegetables, fresh produce, laundry detergent, and other household necessities.

According to food bank officials, nearly 200,000 pounds of products were distributed during the event. More than 70 volunteers assisted with organizing, loading, and distributing supplies throughout the day.
