LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – As many schools begin the new year, one local agency is still taking applications to help prepare children for school.
The West Ohio Community Action Partnership’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs are still enrolling students. The programs serve children from birth to age 5, promoting healthy development for children from low-income families in Allen County. Staff are currently conducting home visits to connect with parents of registered children. Administrators say there is still time to enroll.
“Just working on those socialization skills for low-income families that may not have the opportunity to go to one of the preschools in the area,” said Phyllis Montrose, WOCAP Child Development Services director. “So what we do is that we work on writing skills, alphabet, name recognition, colors, shapes — everything that a child is going to need to get started in kindergarten to start their education career.”
To enroll, parents are asked to bring verification of their last 12 months of income and a copy of their SNAP card if they receive food stamps. An enrollment specialist is available to assist with the process.
