Young dancers step into new styles at DEA Youth Dance Camp

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A couple dozen young dancers spent part of their summer learning new skills, building confidence and having fun through a special dance camp.

The Drug Enforcement Administration Youth Dance Program, offered through its educational foundation, hosted a three-day camp that introduced participants to several styles of dance. During Tuesday's session, dancers practiced tap while performing to Gene Kelly's classic "Singin' in the Rain." The camp also featured ballet instruction and will conclude with jazz dance lessons.

Organizers said the program is designed to expose young dancers to styles they may not regularly encounter while encouraging personal growth and self-confidence.

“I think it's really fun because the dance forms that we're doing in our class are not things that they're seeing daily on social media or TV. So we're teaching them something totally different and they're really embracing it. Just something new and they're just going with it and having a ball,” said Lyn Mulcahy, lead instructor for the DEA Dance Program.

In addition to learning new dance techniques, participants will take home the costumes, props and dance shoes they received through the program.

Organizers hope the camp provides a positive experience that inspires young dancers to continue exploring the performing arts long after the summer program ends.
