LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Area Agency on Aging is helping the public protect something very precious: their identity.
In honor of National Elder Abuse Awareness Month, the Agency on Aging partnered with WiltonKeck for a 3-hour Shred A Thon on Thursday to help people dispose of personal documents like receipts, credit card offers, or any other mail that might contain sensitive information.
"And we see it every single day, unfortunately with the individuals that we serve. The identity theft and the exploitation, and all the scams surrounding older adults. This again just an opportunity to hopefully to reduce that, but also increased awareness that this is a very serious thing that we see again unfortunately too often. We've also had a lot of promotions and marketing items out on our social media pages, as well to again increase the awareness, and make the community aware as well," says Dre White, population health director of the Area Agency Aging 3.
It is important to get rid of documents with personal information properly to keep identity thieves from stealing them. You can visit the Area Agency on Aging 3's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/aaa3.olderamericans.
