CRIDERSVILLE, Ohio (WLIO) — While many Ohioans headed to the polls on Election Day, some area grade school students were getting a firsthand lesson in how local government works.
Third graders at Cridersville Elementary have been studying the legislative, administrative and judicial branches of government. As part of that lesson, the Cridersville Village Council held its May meeting at the school, giving students the opportunity to observe the proceedings and ask questions.
Educators say the in-person experience helps reinforce what students learn in the classroom.
“They learn better. Because it's hands on, instead of just sitting in a classroom and us teaching it, I feel like the kids really learn more when they're involved in something in the community,” said Sabrina Grubb, a third grade paraeducator.
During the visit, students asked council members questions about how laws are made and how officials work to prevent water pollution, among other topics.
