WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Armstrong Air and Space Museum has released newly discovered photographs of Neil Armstrong following his dramatic return from the Gemini VIII mission.
The photographs were taken in 1966 by U.S. veteran Ron McQueeney and were donated to the museum following his passing.
The images show Armstrong and astronaut David Scott at the Naha Air Base following the splashdown of the Gemini VIII capsule.
Armstrong was forced to end the flight early after the spacecraft began spinning uncontrollably in orbit.
According to the museum’s Facebook page, the images have not been shared publicly for nearly 60 years, and museum officials say the pictures offer a new look at Armstrong and his calm leadership after a tense mission that helped carry him to the moon.
