Bike rodeo teaches bike safety

Young bike riders had the chance to learn more about bike safety Saturday morning at a bike rodeo.

Several local organizations came together to put on the event, which helped kids with their bike riding skills as well as checking their bikes to make sure they're ready to ride.  A special course was set up for the riders to go through and practice stopping and turning and staying on their bikes.  Knowing about bike safety allows kids to have fun but still stay out of harm's way when they're out and about.

"I think one of the great things that a kid can have is a little freedom, and a parent wants their kid to have a little freedom, so a bicycle can help do that - you can let kids have fun and mature a little bit, but you want them to be safe and to feel comfortable, and as a parent, when you send your kid out to the community to be physically active, you want that they're following the safety laws and protecting themselves," said Josh Unterbrink, co-director of Activate Allen County.

Helmets were also provided for the kids to try on and take home.
