LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Amateur radio enthusiasts from across the United States will take to the airwaves next weekend to demonstrate radio communication and educate the public during their annual Field Day event.
On June 27 and 28, HAM radio operators will participate in the nationwide event, which highlights the importance of amateur radio communication, particularly during emergencies.
The Northwest Ohio Amateur Radio Club will set up a temporary radio station behind New Hope Christian Church, located at 2240 Baty Road in Lima. Organizers are inviting the public to learn more about becoming amateur radio operators and how those skills can be valuable when cell phone and landline services are unavailable during natural disasters.
“There was a few years ago, there was flooding. I don't I don't remember what state it was in, but HAM operators really came through and helped out people that were isolated and didn't have communication. And that happens a lot with different disasters. I've been on disasters with hurricanes down south and the cell phones go down. Cell towers go down and there's no communication for several days sometimes. HAM Radio really comes through and helps out with communications,” said David Humphreys, participating in Field Day.
The event will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 27, and continue through Sunday morning at the church property.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend and may have the opportunity to speak with amateur radio operators from around the country who are participating in the annual Field Day event.
