Community recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

It was wear purple Wednesday to help bring awareness to elder abuse. Officials from the Allen County Council on Aging say many elders face abusive conditions. Every year an estimated five million older Americans fall victim to abuse, neglect or exploitation. In most cases the abuser is someone the victim knows or trust, like a family member or paid caregiver. If you suspect someone is being abused, they say it's important to have it reported and leave it to the professionals to investigate.

"We are absolutely working towards this to improve the recognition of possible abuse and the reporting of it, the prevention of it, and the prosecution of elder abuse. We are working toward all of those," said Diane Bishop, executive director with the Allen county Council on Aging.

If you suspect elder abuse you can report it to Adult Protective Services at 419-999-0251.
