LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Kids' mental health is an issue that has been front and center lately, and a Lima councilman wants local teens to understand it better.
Derry Glenn will be holding his first youth mental health summit this Saturday. The goal of the summit is to help students in middle and high school open up about mental health and learn more about how to deal with it or identify others who may be struggling with it. Since COVID, mental health issues have been growing, but the best way to fight that trend is to talk about it.
"We just want to make sure that everybody understands what mental health is all about," says Councilman Glenn. "A lot of kids that we have talked to say they hear about it, but they didn't know about it. So, that is what made me put together a summit, so we can bring all the kids in. You can come from any school around here around the Lima area and come on out. A couple of hours, if a parent would like to come and sit in, please come out and sit in. Because it is very crucial that we do this."
The summit is Saturday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Heir Force Community School, located at 150 W. Grand Avenue in Lima, Ohio. There will be speakers and other activities, and the first 25 kids who register will get a free t-shirt.
