Despite the winter weather, Lima councilman kept his tradition of honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. the day before the day in his honor.

The snowstorm kept more than a few away, but 6th ward Councilman Derry Glenn chose not to reschedule his annual dinner.

Only one of the seven award recipients were able to attend. Melinda Simpson was given the Rosa Parks award for her work with the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice as well as getting citizens registered to vote.

Glenn has been hosting the dinner for over 30 years now and says he did not want to cancel it this year because honoring the civil rights leader was too important to him.

"It's so important to me," said Glenn. "Dr. Martin Luther King, he walked in snow, rain, he was stabbed, he was cut at, he was shot at, and [without] a lot of things that Martin Luther King stands for I wouldn't be here today talking to you. I wouldn't be the city councilor I am today."

Glenn will follow up tonight's dinner with his annual Martin Luther King, Jr. walk that will take place Monday, January 21, 2019. The walk will start at the intersection of Reese St. and Holmes Ave. and end at the site of the old Whittier School.
