COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) — Gov. Mike DeWine outlined several priorities for his final year in office during his State of the State Address, including proposed laws on artificial intelligence and seatbelt use.

DeWine highlighted policies he said he is most proud of, including the mandate of the Science of Reading in Ohio schools, banning cell phones in classrooms, and helping students obtain glasses through the OhioSee program.

He also urged the General Assembly to pass laws addressing artificial intelligence, including prohibiting the creation, distribution, and possession of child pornography generated by A.I., requiring tech and cell phone companies to include parental controls for A.I. use, and holding companies accountable for how their A.I. is utilized.

“Hold tech companies accountable for allowing their artificial intelligence to encourage, assist, endorse or instruct anyone, much less a child, to kill themselves, harm themselves, harm others, or kill others,” says DeWine.

DeWine also emphasized the need for stronger seatbelt laws, noting that 60% of people killed in Ohio crashes were not wearing a seatbelt. He proposed making seatbelt violations a primary offense, similar to neighboring states.

“If Ohio were to adopt a stronger, stronger seat belt law, result in increase in seatbelt use, and that would, on average, save five lives each and every month,” adds DeWine.

Additionally, he encouraged lawmakers to pass a law doubling school recess time from 30 minutes to one hour and to continue implementing the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge throughout the state.
