Donations from St. Rita's volunteers provide crucial resources to Allen-Oakwood parolees

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - For prison inmates, re-entering society when they are released can be a challenge, but local volunteers are stepping up to ease that adjustment with some crucial donations.

Several members of the Mercy Health-St. Rita's Volunteer Outreach Committee dropped off donated items to the Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution today for inmates to use when they are released from prison. After learning that the Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution had a need for donations of items for men when they are released, the volunteer committee held a fundraiser in February. Leadership at the Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution and members of the volunteer committee understand the importance of giving these men the opportunity to get back into society with the proper resources and help that they need.

"In November of 2022, one of our staff members, Brenda Guice, had the great idea to start a re-entry clothing store. Because what we saw was that we were releasing men out into the society with sweatshirts, sweat pants and it also helps them if they're gonna go to get interviews so we do have suits here that get donated. We've had men leave here in full suits that are ready for an interview so it just helps them and gives them confidence to prepare into society and be successful upon re-entry," explained Angela Stuff, Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution.

"We thought that this was a good project because we're giving dignity back to the gentlemen who are coming back into society so if you have a new pair of shoes or a new outfit it just makes you feel better about yourself," commented Janice Ball, vice president of St. Rita's Auxiliary Volunteers Outreach.

Items donated ranged from shoes and socks and underwear to hygiene items. If you'd like to donate to the re-entry clothing store, just call the Mercy Health-St. Rita's volunteer office at 419-226-9038.
