Whether it is full-on flooding or just damp walls, some homes in the area are seeing the effects of last night's heavy rain.
Some properties that might have been affected by the rain in the past are water-free because of how their sump pump and drainage systems are designed. Even in older basements, a drainage network that captures water and redirects it before it gets into the foundation can prevent water from going anywhere it is not supposed to. Doing this can protect the items in your basement from water damage and prevent you from losing value on your property.
"Different realtor sites like realtor.com and places have done some studies and they say on average you can lose anywhere from 20 to 25 percent because of a wet basement," said John Clements, owner of the Basement Doctor. "It is an unhealthy, unusable space that you paid money for. [It] gives them a clean, dry living space that they can actually utilize, carpet, drywall, make a family room out of it."
According to Clements, even if these drainage networks are not fully finished, they can still help to redirect water to the home's sump pump.
