Educating the Educators

It's a familiar scene for the Ohio State University: one of learning.  But rather than college students receiving a lesson, today it's faculty and administrators. They're on a two day tour of northwest Ohio called OSU Roads Scholars to learn more about different areas of study and the businesses that OSU partners with.

"We think of faculty as teachers, but faculty are learners as well.  Just like our students in our classes, like students in our elementary schools, we are actually looking for opportunities to have them learn by being immersed in the experience.  Getting them out of their offices, out of the classrooms, and out here into communities really makes a difference in how those those lessons stick," said Bruce McPheron, Provost and Executive Vice President of the Ohio State University.

The group visited Unverferth Manufacturing in Kalida to learn more about advancements in agriculture being done there as well as the partnership that they have with OSU.  "We hope to just kind of explain in general the partnership, how it's beneficial to both Ohio State and our Unverferth Manufacturing and help us both succeed going forward," said Greg Unverferth, Manager of Manufacturing, Engineering, and Continuous Improvement at Unverferth Manufacturing.

The group includes faculty from every area of study at the university and this trip not only gives them the opportunity to learn new things but also gives them the chance to explain things that fall under their areas of expertise with the businesses they meet.

"We try to choose stops that have a lot of breadth of interests," McPheron said.

It's all to help broaden the views of those educators to bring something new to the classroom this fall.
