The 4th graders had to research and write an essay on water problems and conservation efforts going on around the world. To help out with that, the Bent Finger Foundation, whose mission is to promote fishing and keeping waterways clean, rewarded the students for their hard work and research. The 4th grade students that completed their essay got a free fishing pole, but more importantly an important lesson about helping the planet.

"Make sure that conservation of our waterways is important and we believe that at this age group, the're going to pass the word on for us," said Debra Van Buskirk, Bent Finger Foundation.

By writing the essays on water conservation, the students learned a lot about the impact they have on the planet and how they can help with the water crisis around the world.

"Because they need to help save our environment and our Earth, Earth's water, and think about everyone else who doesn't have it on our planet," said Kaylee Wallace, Elida 4th grader.

"We have clean water and some people wish they could have the opportunity to have access to clean water," commented Aleisa Chaneler, Elida 4th grader.

"That a lot of people take water for granted. Us Americans don't have to hardly do anything, we can just go to our refrigerator and get water, where people around the world could have to walk miles just to get a sip of water," said Isabelle Hollstein, Elida 4th grader.

Besides the fishing poles, the first, second, and third place essay winners also got gift certificates for Westgate Entertainment Center.
