Golf Cart Safety and Rules

Golf carts are a popular way to get around during the summer months, while saving money on gas. While fun and convenient, cities and villages are cracking down, passing ordinances to make the roads safer. Elida just passed an ordinance on Tuesday, treating golf carts as if they were cars. Elida now requires residents to get their carts inspected and purchase plates at the BMV, and requires carts to be checked by the police department.

Many cities and villages are following the state law that requires golf carts to have everything a motor vehicle does, but restricts their use on roads to streets where the speed limit is 25 mph or less.

At Indian Lake, golf carts are everywhere. Marty and Ruth Harrison even opened up a drive-thru, focused on golf carts. Marty understands the use of carts to get to and from, but would like to see golf cart safety taken one step further. He says he would like to see a special path created for carts, similar to the paths created for bikes.

For a list of rules and regulations when it comes to operating a golf cart on the road way, you are asked to contact your local police department for information on local ordinances.
