LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Rhodes State College has a large nursing program to say the least - with all of the different degrees combined, around 300-400 students are enrolled in Rhodes' nursing program at any given time.

One of those degrees that Rhodes offers is an associates in nursing, which is a two year program. "They do get their associate degree at the end, and then they can sit for their national state board exam called the NCLEX, and that’s what gives their nursing license to become a registered nurse," said Dr. Melissa Harvey, assistant dean of nursing at Rhodes State College.

While earning an associates in nursing, Rhodes students will have the opportunity to take a variety of courses, including nursing technical classes to prepare them for many different situations while in the health care field. Students are able to get more hands-on with the things that they are learning thanks to the labs and equipment at the Borra Center for Health Sciences in downtown Lima.

"Nursing is very heavy in the sciences, so anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pathophysiology are good core classes that they will take," said Dr. Harvey. "Here at the Borra Center, we focus more on the technical side of things - so actual nursing skills, all those little things that they have to help patients with; ambulating, passing medications, giving IV fluids, and things like that. They’re going to learn all of those things here at the Borra Center."

"I really like the Borra Center definitely more than main campus, there’s a lot of new technology and a lot of stuff that comes with that and the sim labs are great," Audrey Rex, who is enrolled in the RN program at Rhodes State College.

And several nursing students at Rhodes State have a similar story of why they decided to pursue nursing, a chance to continue the legacy that other family members started. That also rings true for some faculty as well.

"My grandma is nurse and she went to Rhodes, so that was a big reason why," said Rex "I also work at Saint Rita’s so it’s close to home."

"Myself and many of the faculty who teach in the nursing program are alumni from Rhodes State, and it’s kind of a legacy to give back and to teach the next generation of nurses," said Dr. Harvey.
