Growing STEM: St. Rita's director of project management helps bring projects together

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - A sign of progress in any industry can be seen with building projects adding on to what's already around, and that is just part of what Willow Lowery does for Mercy Health - St. Rita's.

Lowery is the director of project management for the hospital, organizing collaborative teams for construction, IT, and maintenance projects, making sure that everyone is on the same page when things need done.

"I try to pull everybody in, get them around the table," said Lowery. "We discuss the logistics of it, the pros, the cons, obstacles that we may come into contact with, all those types of things. Create the plan, then execute the plan. So I try to coordinate the chaos, if you will, within the project and all the team members."

One recent project that lowery has helped to coordinate includes the new Mercy Tots daycare facility that opened last fall.

While one may only think of the medical side of a hospital, there are many other moving parts within its walls that work together to keep the building functioning and growing.

"If you have an interest in helping people, but you may not want to do that clinical type work, I take pride in the fact that I support the people supporting and taking care of our patients," said Lowery. "I get to work on those computers, I get to work on the design aspect of different projects, but I'm not doing that hands-on care. I get to do what I like to do in the realm that I like to do it in and still support our caregivers."

To start a career like Lowery's, she says that you can obtain a project management certificate, though she has a background in IT and worked her way into her current position.

Colleges like Owens Community College and Columbus State Community College offer project management programs in Ohio.
