ST. MARYS, Ohio (WLIO) — With gas prices climbing to their highest levels in years, some people making Memorial Day weekend plans are staying a little closer to home.

GasBuddy predicts the national average for a gallon of gas could reach $4.48 by Memorial Day, nearly $1.50 more than this time last year. But that is not stopping people from getting out for the holiday weekend. Instead of long road trips, many are choosing shorter getaways.

For some campers at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park, the holiday weekend trip has become an annual tradition. Campers were setting up ahead of the holiday weekend, with many saying they return year after year to enjoy the park and stay close to home.

High gas prices push more Memorial Day travelers to stay closer to home

“Usually we pick a campground close, whether it be St. Marys, Fort Loramie, someplace close that we can go back home for kids and grandkids events, or just be close in case we need something,” said George Berelsman of Delphos.

“Ohio’s number one in state parks now, and all the states around that we go to are good, but I think we’re really proud of that, and it shows up here too. The facilities are very nice,” said Jack Wiechart, who camps at Grand Lake St. Marys each year.

The St. Marys campground is open year-round, with its peak season running through Nov. 1.
