The holidays are full of family fun and celebrations but while you enjoy the season, make sure you stay aware of fire hazards.
One of the biggest holiday fire safety tips is to make sure you keep your tree watered. Un-watered trees are much more susceptible to catching fire, especially if you leave light strands that heat up on for long periods of time.
You should also keep an eye on heating unit, candles, and even your cooking.
"Cooking fires do increase during this time of year also," said Lima Fire Dept. firefighter paramedic Emily Bowsher. "If you do have a cooking fire on the stove, if you can, put a lid on the pan; take it off the heat. If you can't do that, just get out of the house and call 911."
Bowsher says the best defense against holiday fires is making sure you have smoke detectors throughout the house and that they are fully operational.
