The Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District hosted their first group hike of the new year at Kendrick Woods. The park district says that getting out on your local trails is a good way to make progress on your resolution to get healthy in the new year, both physically and mentally. Besides being good exercise, spending time outdoors during winter can also help manage seasonal depression. Though there's not as many plants out right now, there's still plenty to see while walking through nature this time of the year.

"Sometimes when we come out in the quiet of the winter, we're able to appreciate some of the the things that are often overlooked. Things like the buds on trees or the mosses and lichens. We can see tracks and signs of animals that have been moving through. Some things that either you'd overlook or not be able to appreciate at other times of the year," said Dan Hodges, a naturalist with the Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District.

The park district also recommends dressing in multiple layers before heading out to enjoy the outdoors in colder temperatures.
