LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis as blood supplies continue to reach critically low levels, prompting an urgent call for donors.
According to the Red Cross, supplies are especially low for Type O blood. The supply of Type O-positive blood has fallen below a one-day supply. They are encouraging people to donate to help the need at hospitals and patients undergoing medical treatments.
To help address the shortage, the Lima AAA office will host an American Red Cross blood drive on Aug. 12. The organization is encouraging both AAA members and area residents to donate blood and help meet the growing demand.
“We always look for ways that we can give back to the community and this was just something new, an opportunity presented itself and we said, yeah, we'd love to have you come and do this blood drive. So, we're excited for it. You know, anything that we can do, we've all got a little blood to spare. So, it makes us feel really good that we can help out wherever we can," says Cindy Nelson, Manager, Lima AAA.
The August 12 blood drive will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Lima AAA office, located at 2115 Allentown Road. Appointments can be made by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by scanning the QR code below.Â
