LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Ohio State students help the Spartan Ride make sure the students have a good book for the summer.
The Education Club donated 70 books to the Spartan Ride that they bought with money they raised from a Scholastic Book Fair they held this past school year.Â
The students will be able to take the books home from the Spartan Ride and keep them. The books cover a wide range of reading levels, from picture books to chapter books and even some comic books.
The education club decided at the beginning of the year they wanted to find a way to give back, and what better way than turning the young Spartans into lifelong readers?
"One of the biggest predictors of vocabulary growth is how much students are able to read. So, with it being summer, it's good to get these books out here. Give the kids access to these books," says Regan King, treasurer of the Education Club at OSU Lima.Â
"One of the things we like to do is get kids engaged in reading from a young age, and these books will really help with that. They are high-interest books, so we can grab those readers young and keep them reading throughout their lives," says Laura Wells-Parent, Federal Programs Title 1 coordinator at Lima City Schools.Â
The Spartan Ride will visit the summer lunch sites starting next week. Besides the books, the students can take home other activities and learning materials to help keep the kids busy over the summer.Â
