LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Lima City Schools wrapped up National Police Week with a celebration honoring local law enforcement officers and the relationships they build with students throughout the school year.
Dozens of students in kindergarten through fourth grade participated in the event Friday morning, creating handmade cards, coloring pictures and designing banners to thank officers for their service. Students also handed out cookies to the officers during the celebration. School resource officers said the annual event helps strengthen positive interactions between children and law enforcement agencies serving the Lima area.
“This is a fun annual event that we get to participate in every year, that celebrates all the officers from around our area, that all of our kids in LPD jurisdiction would interact with,” said Officer Amanda Leugers, West Middle School resource officer. “We get to just have a fun time with the kids and celebrate National Police Week.”
The celebration also included a dance party where officers joined students on the dance floor. At the end of the event, officers formed a tunnel to high-five students and wish them a great summer break. School officials say activities like these help students become more comfortable interacting with law enforcement while creating lasting positive memories.
