LIMA, OH (WLIO) - As the summer starts up, Lima City Schools are turning up the heat on learning and fun with their exciting summer camps.
These camps, happening across the district, offer students a chance to engage in hands-on activities and field trips. The camps take place at students' home schools and are free for families. The district launched this program to keep students engaged and learning during the summer months.
"One thing that's been found over the years is that when children take a lot of time away from school, there's what's called 'extinction', where they kind of forget some things. By working through June, it cuts the extinction time down. So, it keeps them fresh and ready to go through the fall," says Mike Freed, a teacher at Lima North Middle School.
"We've been learning about cotton candy; we've done teamwork; and we were just learning other stuff," explained La'Ayla Lee, an incoming 6th grader at Lima North Middle School.
"You learn more for the next year, and plus, it's a lot of fun," commented Lucas Hildenbrand, an incoming 6th grader at Lima North Middle School.
This week, Candy Land Camp is happening at Lima North Middle School. Students are diving into the sweet history of candy and even using it to learn about the scientific method and STEM projects. The cherry on top is a field trip to Spangler's Candy Factory in Bryan.
