LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The arrival of summer weather has its benefits, but it also can pose a dangerous threat to some.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, people 65 and older are at a higher risk of heat illness, even if they're not exercising. Some reasons include serious medical conditions such as heart disease, some medications, especially those for insomnia or poor circulation, and mainly a lack of air conditioning in their homes.
Councilman Derry Glenn is kicking off the 8th annual air conditioning program for residents who are in need of an air conditioning unit to combat the summer heat. Glenn is asking for air conditioners to be donated or monetary donations to help provide AC to residents who are in need of cool air in their homes for the summer.
"We did so good last year. Over 150 people got air conditioning. New or old, you know, and it's exciting. We will pick the air conditioning up. Just give us a call at 419-905-9572 we'll pick it up. It's so exciting when you see the elderly people that need the air conditioner, that can't afford the air conditioner. The cost of living went so high right now and a lot of us cannot afford them. We're in as far as Auglaize County, helping people out in Auglaize County too. Not just Allen County, but outside the county, so we wanna help everyone out. We're hoping that these social clubs, churches, come out and help us out the best you can. If you got an air conditioner sitting around, we went out and bought some new air conditioners. Let us help you because we'll be sure it'll get to the right people," said Derry Glenn, Sixth Ward Councilman.
Again, to donate or request an air conditioning unit from Councilman Glenn's program, you can call 419-905-9572.
