LIMA, OH (WLIO) - A Lima city councilman is inviting the public to a meeting this week to get their questions about recent immigration answered.
6th Ward Councilman Derry Glenn is hosting a free, open to the public, follow-up forum on Haitian immigrants in Lima this Wednesday. At the last meeting in May, Glenn took questions from residents and has since spoken to law enforcement, city government, and school officials to learn more about topics like housing, employment, and the legal status of immigrants from Haiti and other countries in our area.
Glenn says that much of the information spreading on social media is incorrect, like the rumor that they're receiving thousands in free money from the government. He hopes the meeting encourages the public to be more welcoming and respectful of these new neighbors.
"They're part of our community. Like we accept the Indians, a lot of Indians here, the Mexicans, we accepted them, China. All immigrants that came to this community, we accepted them here. That's how we have to build a bridge. We built a bridge then, so why can't we build it now?" Councilman Glenn said.
The meeting will be held at the Wingate hotel in downtown Lima on Wednesday, July 10th, at 6 p.m. There will also be immigrants from Haiti at the forum for Q&A sessions.
