Local gun store owner responds to Trump tweets

After the latest school shooting there is a lot of debate on what steps government should take next to prevent something like this from happening again in the future. But what is the right answer?

That is the question people all over the nation are asking. In a tweet, President Donald Trump suggested that Congress ban bump stocks and even raising the legal age to buy a rifle from 18 to 21 years old. Cindy Verhoff, Co-Owner of Ottawa Ordinance Firearms and Accessories, says raising the age is only going to punish those who do not break the law.

"I honestly don't think it's fair," says Verhoff. "I think it's going to be taking rights away from people who are considered adults, who have to abide by the rules of adults, and this is one more thing that they're taking away."

Trump also suggested moving towards more comprehensive background checks that put more of an emphasis on mental health. While Verhoff agrees that mental health is a factor, she says the government should focus on fixing the mental health care system instead of background checks.

"This is something out tax dollars should be spending some money on to help these people get past whatever it is they need to get past to become a productive citizen of society," says Verhoff. "When somebody does that and somebody has a mental health problem but they haven't been in the system yet, that's where it does not show up on the background check."
