LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - For those who are cooking at home for the family this Thanksgiving, health officials have some suggestions to keep everyone happy and healthy. They say that cooking the turkey to the proper temperature is key.
Nartker says that you need to get the food back in the fridge or turn the crock pot back on within two hours of having it out.
"When you're cooking any foods, especially the turkey, you want to cook everything to the right temperatures," said Brian Nartker, director of environmental health for Allen County Public Health. "With the turkey, make sure it gets to 165 degrees." You always want to use a thermometer when you're cooking things; that way you know it's at a safe temperature, and I guess you get the added benefit that you're not overcooking your foods."
Nartker says that you need to get the food back in the fridge or turn the crock pot back on within two hours of having it out. He also says you have up to seven days to eat the leftovers before they go bad.
