With the weather continuing to warm up, motorcyclists are ready to shake off the cold and get out and ride.
May is “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month” and the Ohio State Highway Patrol wants to remind motorist and motorcyclist to take the time to be a little more cautious out on the road. Last year, there were over 33 hundred accidents that involved motorcycles. 146 people were killed and another 2,842 people were injured in those accidents. While those numbers were an improvement from 2017, troopers would like to see those numbers go down even further and just taking a second look before pulling out into an intersection could be a lifesaver.
“It’s very important to take the time when you come up to a stop sign, to stop look both ways and then proceed once it is clear to do so,” says Sgt Shawn Cook of the Lima Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. “Not only it that good to practice around riders, but it’s also good to practice in general.”
The Ohio State Highway Patrol also recommends motorist give motorcycles their space while on the road and riders wear the protective gear, like helmets when they travel to help prevent major injuries if they do get into an accident.
