LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Right by the community gardens located at the intersection of Spring and Collett Streets, you will find a box that hopes to address food insecurity in the area.
Mercy Health-St. Rita's installed a Blessing Box that will serve as a place where struggling families can anonymously pick up food. Those who are also interested in donating can come to the box and leave food items inside. Another box will be installed at the newest community garden on South Jackson Street. According to those from the hospital, there has already been a variety of food dropped off by local residents.
"Ever since the blessing box was been installed, I think people discovered it. The people who are generously filling it have just arrived out of nowhere without any public knowledge of it. People are coming to help themselves to items that they might need, whether it's canned goods or other items, and so even before the publics been aware of this on an official basis, the blessing box has been filled and emptied many times," said Laurie Camper, who initiated the project.
Each box was built by Apollo Career Center students.
*Update/Correction - Another blessing box will be located on South Jackson Street in the near future but is not installed yet.
